Quick answer

Yes, you can leave DXB during a layover — UAE visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry applies to many nationalities, and the Metro reaches the city in under 20 minutes. Airside, sleep pods, a hotel, showers and lounges keep an overnight comfortable.

Dubai International (DXB) is one of the world's busiest long-haul hubs, with vast Emirates lounges, in-terminal hotels and 24-hour energy. Leaving is realistic for many travellers thanks to the UAE's visa-on-arrival and transit visa options, and the Metro Red Line links the airport directly to Downtown Dubai and the Marina. For shorter or overnight stops, the terminals are well equipped to wait in comfort.

  • Many nationalities get visa-on-arrival; others use a 48- or 96-hour transit visa — see our Dubai transit visa guide.
  • The Metro Red Line connects DXB directly to Downtown and the Marina.
  • Emirates and pay-in lounges, plus showers, are covered in our DXB lounge guide.
  • For overnight waits, compare in-terminal hotels and city options in our DXB hotels guide.

Transit overview

DXB is enormous and rarely sleeps, which is both its charm and its challenge. Terminals 1 and 3 connect airside by train, so connections between them are manageable — but allow 90 minutes or more. Terminal 2 (flydubai) is separate and usually means a landside transfer, so treat those connections with extra caution.

For rest, DXB offers SnoozeCube sleep pods, quiet Zen and Snooze zones, and the airside Dubai International Hotel with rooms by the hour or night. Showers come with lounges or the hotel.

  • T1 ↔ T3 connected airside by train
  • T2 is separate — avoid tight connections through it
  • Airside hotel and sleep pods for overnight waits

Leaving for the city

Many nationalities get UAE visa-free entry or visa-on-arrival, and the Dubai Metro Red Line runs directly from Terminals 1 and 3 into the city, reaching the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall area in around 20 minutes. With 6+ hours you can see a landmark and return comfortably.

Mind the heat in summer — outdoor sightseeing is punishing midday, so a mall or indoor attraction is the smarter choice. Confirm your visa status before planning to leave.

Should you leave DXB on a layover?

With around eight hours or more and the right entry permission, Dubai rewards a city trip — the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and the Marina are all Metro-accessible. With less time, DXB's enormous terminals, lounges and in-terminal hotels make staying inside easy. Our 8-hour Dubai layover plan and overnight Dubai layover guide cover both routes.

  • Under ~6 hours: stay airside; the terminals are huge.
  • 8+ hours: Downtown Dubai and the Marina are doable by Metro.
  • Check visa-on-arrival or transit visa eligibility first.

Lounges, showers and resting

Emirates operates concourse-length Business and First lounges, while Marhaba, Plaza Premium and Priority Pass options serve everyone else with showers and hot food. For real sleep, DXB has in-terminal hotels and rest options — see our DXB lounge guide and DXB hotels guide.

Getting into the city

The Metro Red Line is the cheapest and most predictable way into Dubai, avoiding traffic; taxis and ride-hailing are plentiful but slower at peak times. Plan it with our DXB-to-Downtown transfer guide, and allow time to clear immigration both ways.
