Layover Guides by City & Duration
Whether you have four hours or a full day, these guides show exactly how to use the time — sleep, explore the city, or relax airside.
Our layover guides answer the real question: what can you actually do with the hours between flights? They're organised by city and by duration — from a tight four-hour stop to a full overnight — and cover whether to leave the airport, where to rest, and how to avoid missing your onward flight. Pair them with the relevant airport guide and transit visa rules.
How much can you do on a layover?
The rough rule: under about five hours after immigration, staying airside is usually smarter; with five to seven hours a nearby sight may be doable; and with seven-plus you can often reach a city centre and back with a comfortable buffer. Distance from the airport changes everything — see, for example, our 4-hour Changi plan versus a far-flung hub.
Always plan around the return: immigration, security and the trip back to the gate eat into your window, so leave more buffer than feels necessary.
Leaving the airport vs staying airside
Leaving only makes sense if you're eligible to enter the country and the city is close enough to enjoy. If not, the best hubs make staying inside genuinely pleasant — see our lounge and rest guides. For overnight waits, our airport hotel guides cover where to actually sleep.
